Machu Picchu
Summary:
A 12 day trip to visit a partner school in Cusco and share lessons, experience a different culture and visit areas of interest. After acclimatising to the high altitude, we spent 3 days in school, 2 days visiting Machu Picchu plus experiencing a totally different culture to our own. Pupils taught lessons in English to Spanish speaking pupils, visited cultural sites, shopped using different currency, ate food they had never seen before and visited one of the wonders of the world, Machu Piccchu.
Language was an issue and a Spanish speaker is needed for this trip - fortunately we had one! We also had a local'fixer' who was able to arrange minibuses, train tickets to Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu etc. There were many special moments on the trip in addition to Machu Picchu: reaching the top of Wayna Picchu, salsa dancing lessons, watching pupils joining is discussion groups with Peruvian students, the look on their faces when given gas masks to help with composting during the farming lessons!
It was a trip of a lifetime for them, and me, which we hope to repeat again in the future.
