Summary:
A most valuable and enjoyable day out despite the early start. Wimereux was just perfect for what we wanted.
Venue:
Wimereux
Having decided to open our rural children's eyes to the wider world I chose Wimereux as an ideal location - just enough to do and see and small enough so as not to overwhelm them, also too small for them to get lost! I'd been on a couple of pre-visits and the 'Mairie'(Town Hall) had agreed to open public toilets on the promenade for us when we would be arriving. The market stall holders were very patient and friendly when our children attempted to make themselves understood and hand over the right number of euros. One of the local primary schools agreed to us visiting them to practise our French on them and had also kindly agreed to us using their facilities if the weather had been wet.
There's also a lovely wide sandy beach and sand-filled play park on the promenade for when the tide's in. Just enough of interest to do a tour of the town too.

These guys were brilliant! From a good quote to putting up with our ever-changing details/requests, to the
drivers and the coach - we couldn't fault them. The two drivers were really friendly and knew the north coast of France well. They were at our beck and call throughout the day, always there when we wanted to drop stuff off etc. They even put up with a lot of singing of loud and repetitive songs by the children without complainiing!
Only minor complaint was the coach was rather hot despite the air conditioning but that was partly the weather - rather warm.

Benefit:
Great opportunity to practise little bits of French both at the market and in the school, also when buying an ice cream along the promenade. Useful for children to see another culture first hand. It was also one child's first ever visit to a beach/seeing the sea - worthwhile for that alone. Some of the parents who accompanied us (many of whom had never been abroad before) discovered how accessible the continent is.
Plus points:
As mentioned above - market, school, beach. Reasonably priced cafes and restaurants along promenade. Amenable Town Hall employees. Using Eurotunnel. Whole trip for £35.
Minus points:
Long coach drive from home town to Folkestone! Warm coach on return journey. Having to have a passport for every child.
