New Art Gallery, Walsall
We take Y10s every year and I am always impressed with this gallery. The curating is excellent, and very accessible to young people. Interesting visiting exhibitions usually of contemporary artwork, which contrasts well with the permanent collection. The Permanent collection is very good for portrait work, lots of sculptural work from all eras & range of cultures, plenty of Epstein, but also works by Van Gogh, Monet, Turner, Corot, Renoir and Constable. A something for everyone kind of gallery, and our Y10s always enjoy the visit. The gallery staff are very relaxed about young people - unlike some places I have been to. Pupils are able to explore at their own pace (without having to be herded around under close supervision). There is usually an artist in residence who can give pupils tours and talks, and sometimes workshops. We give pupils free time in the pedestrian shopping centre, but school rooms are available for lunch if wished. Cafe is pricey as usual with galleries, but a cafe/bar right next to the gallery is a reasonable & pleasant place for lunch.
Benefit:
Relevant to art at all key stages. There is even a discovery gallery for very young children.
Plus points:
Great gallery with excellent curating & wide range of artworks to cater for all interests. Good location.
