National Portrait Gallery trip - GCSE

Year Group:
Key Stage 4
Venue Region:
London
Summary:
Venue: National Portrait Gallery
Excellent, varied collection for GCSE Art students to study - if you book early enough you can book up to 20 students into a workshop with the gallery staff. They provide materials and a 2 hour workshop where students will be doing practical activities as well as looking at symbolism/composition etc. Workshops are free and they have lockers that can be used by school parties.

The main drawback is that there is no lunch room for students - this can prove tricky in winter when the weather isn't very good. We took our students to a McDonalds that is very close to the gallery (their choice I might add!!).

Transport: Swallow Coaches
Always use them as they are based close to the school and very reliable
Benefit:
All together a very worthwhile trip - students got a lot out of it plus extra work for their sketchbooks. You really do need to plan this a couple of months in advance as the workshops get booked up quickly (this is worse in summer).
Plus points:

1) Free workshops - they provide materials
2) Workshop can be altered to fit your SOW
3) Easy to get to
4) Excellent Education Dept
5) Lockers
Minus points:

1) No lunch room for students
2) A high proportion of the work is quite traditional - students prefered the modern/abstract pieces
Overall:
