Spanish Trip to Murcia

by Chris on 4th January 2009
Department:
Modern Foreign Languages
Year Group:
Key Stage 3
Venue Region:
Spain
Town:
Murcia
Summary:
We all loved it! It is not a common destination for school trips and you will have to be prepared to do quite a lot of the planning yourself as it can't be booked as a package. But there are so many things to do, we could have done lots more if we had had longer there. We did the trip on a tight budget but it is not an expensive region. The people are absolutely charming, very friendly and helpful.
Tour Operator: Travel Counsellors
Fantastic! They booked the flights and the hotel for us. They were very patient when our numbers kept going up and down. Recommended.
Venue: Murcia, south-east Spain
This was a great destination. There was plenty to see in the local area and the public transport links were good, which made getting to nearby towns easy.
Accommodation: Campanile Hotel
Absolutely fantastic! This is the best hotel I have ever stayed in on a school trip. The hotel was modern and well equipped and had its own restaurant which was reasonably priced. The breakfasts were great, with a wide choice to please even the
Transport: Autocares Torre Alta
We used this firm to take us to and from the airport. The journey to the hotel was fine but on the return journey they got the time wrong and we only just got to the airport on time.
Benefit:
Most people did not speak English and the kids had to use their Spanish to communicate. I produced a booklet for students to work through which included a series of language and cultural tasks and they had plenty of opportunities to complete these.
Plus points:

Free tram into the city from the Campanile.
Trip to Alicante by train including visit to old town, beach and castle.
Day in Cartagena, including walk along the sea front, seeing the first submarine ever built, the Roman amphitheatre.
Time in Murcia itself, including visit to market, park, Salzillo museum (sculpture), cathedral square and visit to tower plus shopping time.
Full day visit to Aqua Natura and Terra Natura. We did the zoo in the morning, had lunch there (booked in advance) and then the water park in the afternoon. It's walkable from the Campanile.
Some great restaurants with very reasonably priced menus and lots of choice.
Minus points:
Took the narrow gauge railway from Cartagena to Los Nietos. Not much there except beach and weather wasn't good.
Lift up to Alicante's Santa Bárbara castle wasn't working.
Visit to Thader shopping centre was a bit of a hassle and the shops were not that wonderful.
