Trip to Dorset

by martyn on 29th January 2010
Department:
Geography
Year Group:
Sixth form
Venue Region:
South West England
Town:
Swanage
Summary:
Worthwhile and a destination which is ideal for the Edexcel AS level. Accommodation is well suited to sixth form groups.
Venue: Dorset Coast
Long established as a good venue for Geography Fieldwork. With the new Edexcel specification we were able to research for both the Crowded Coasts and Rebranding units. The rebranding focused on rural rebranding (Jurassic Coast and rural Dorset) and urban rebranding (Weymouth - Including Olympic Venue). We were staying in Swanage where we could undertake a lot of our coastal fieldwork. However we also visited and completed fieldwork on all the other famous coastal landforms in the area.
Accommodation: Sandhaven Guest House
Perfect accommodation for 6th form. The management are very friendly and accommodatiing. Prices are very reasonable and include packed lunches. The guest house is clean and all rooms are en-suite.
Benefit:
Very good for the Geographical Investigations module of the AS Edexcel specification. For our students it gave them the necessary learning but also opened their eyes to what amazing features there are in this country. Which is one of my main drives for taking fieldwork.
Plus points:
Swanage small sleepy town ideal for 6th form groups
Minus points:
None really although you have to think carefully about what you can and can't do in the time given.
Overall:
