Summary:
A fantastic experience for the pupils, a jam packed day making Tudor History come to life and fun. The pupils were fully occupied the whole time and were able to take so much home with them not only the; food and writing, candles, brass rubbbings, pomanders and Tudor pockets but memories of a fun day out actually learning about life as a Tudor. I was a bit concerned about dressing everyone up in Tudor costume, it sounds a bit more daunting than World War II costumes but the pupils and parent helpers did a wonderful job and, thanks to ebay in many cases, we all looked the part.
Venue:
Hooke Court, Hooke, Nr Beaminster. DT8 3NX
Building dates back to 1406, so provides an excellent backdrop to any Tudor History teaching. Set in a typical Dorset village, it is a beautiful location winter or summer.
Benefit:
This trip was tailored to our needs to teach us about Tudor life with workshops organised by centre tutors. In one day we covered life in the house and kitchens, food for rich and poor (the pupils made a variety of cakes and biscuits) , tudor games, tudor schooling and costume. All the pupils created different items such as candles and pockets to take home.
Plus points:
Alan the tutor had the children transfixed with his tales of Tudor times. All the tutors are dressed in Tudor costumes as are we staff and pupils alike, which all adds to the authenticity. He had the boys sitting up straight in the school room in no time! The staff are always on hand to help and provide you with essential tea and coffee just when you need it. The knowledge of the tutors is invaluable, you will learn so many snippets about where our words have come from, it is fascinating.
Minus points:
Virtually nothing to complain about, only that a shortage of toilet facilities made available meant pupils often queuing.
