Year Group:
Key Stage 1
Venue Region:
South West England
Town:
Bristol
Summary:
We had been studying animals as a topic for the term prior to the visit, and this really helped, as when we got to the zoo the children knew all about the animals and were able to recognise certain features etc. They really enjoyed seeing the animals in 'real life'. We were a bit worried about taking the Year 2's for over an hour on the bus, but for many of our children it was their first time to go over the Severn bridge and this was an experience for them in itself!
Venue:
Bristol Zoo
Benefit:
Plus points:
* Free places for adults:One adult is admitted free for every three 3-5 yr olds when visiting as a group.
One adult is admitted free for every seven children/pupils when visiting as a group.
* Website offers good information about animals to prepare children for the visit.
* There are extra workshops avialable for an extra charge, which are said to be good, but book in advance as we couldn't get in.
* Gift shop has a range of things at different prices for children to purchase a keepsake.
* Free talks and animal encounters are available throughout the day, but plan these carefully as some clash.
* If dry, there are plenty of different areas for the children to eat their lunch.
Minus points:
Animal encounters & talks sometimes clash or are at opposite ends of the zoo, not easy getting a large group of 6 years to move quickly!!!
If the weather is against you the zoo would be less enjoyable!
